Abstract

As Eastern Europe emerges from communism and seeks to develop democracy and a private sector economy, it looks to Western Europe for models. Yet in many ways, East Asia offers more useful guideposts. The East Asian experience in joint ventures, capital market development, and legal and infrastructural development offers lessons which should not be lost on Eastern Europe. Nor should they be lost on U.S. corporate leaders who are assessing opportunities in Eastern Europe.
