The article explores the practice of executive search in the United States. During the last ten years, the rate of growth of executive recruiting consultants is greater than that of general management consultancy, which underlines the needs of the business community and its increasing reliance on executive search. The process of external recruiting can be a great stimulus to high-level performance and is the surest way of gauging whether performance and compensation are mutually competitive. On the other hand, the process of search by research, using the position specifications as a guide, generates much feedback to the client. Executive search is susceptible to varying interpretations, because numerous projects are labeled "executive search," and because there are various search approaches.
