This article acknowledges and endorses the designation of management development as a change process and analyzes the initial phase of change closely. The management development process is examined, believing that change models have much to say about the development process, especially if the early phases are accorded proper emphasis. Given the organizational context of the changes inherent in management development, there are comments on the importance of managerial readiness and preparation for change. The pioneering work of psychologist Kurt Lewin will serve as the proper point of reference. Lewin's classic leadership studies and group decision-making experiments are well established in the literature and lore of psychology.
