This article focuses on the role of chief financial vice president in a growth company. The financial vice president of a corporation today is the chief financial executive. The emergence and widespread use in recent years of the title financial vice president or vice president, finance, reflects a change and growth both in the American economy and in the role of the chief financial officer of the substantial industrial corporation. Such changes in industrial society and its component industrial corporations have produced an inexorable shift in top management orientation from sales and production to planning and controls. The rise of the financial vice president parallels this top management shift. Implicit in the new era are greater responsibility and greater power for the capital managers. These managers must choose between competing actual and potential uses of capital and then vindicate that choice with successful performance despite omnipresent problems and turbulence.
