U.S. industry is under full-scale attack by foreign competitors, but the response of the Fortune 500 has been alarmingly slow and at times non-existent. However, a new American competitor is emerging. This article describes the traits of this new competitor and prescribes ways to keep the heat turned up on the laggards in American industry. What is needed is not more protection or useless attempts at creating a level playing field. Instead government must play a more active role in spurring competition through heightened compassion and a renewed commitment to enhancing, not restricting, world trade.
