A major transformation in the telecommunications industry is currently underway. By the early 1990s, the telecommunications services and equipment sector is expected to account for between 7 and 10% of the GDP in advanced countries. In light of this, this article examines the effects of deregulation in the U.S. and "developmental re-regulation" in Japan and discusses the implications for international competition in this burgeoning industry.
