Strategies for Economic Development in Southern California
Bradwell, David
9/1  (Fall 1966): 81-92

The economic development taking place in the national economy, many of which are being spearheaded by changes occurring in Southern California includes increasing leisure opportunities and the continuing opportunities and challenges presented by the expanding areas in which automation and cybernation change not only ways of producing but also ways of thinking about and organizing society. The increasing diversity of products and services, the enormous demands being placed upon the educational system at all levels, the challenges and profit opportunities presented by systematic exploration of the seabed, Antarctica, and outer and inner space are all fields to which Southern California has contributed and will continue to contribute its manifold resources and talents. The economic base of a region is the industry or group of industries which sells a high proportion of their product outside of the region. These are the industries whose principal markets are in the rest of the United States and in the rest of the world. The economic base of the Southern California region consists of those industries which create and maintain an inflow of dollars to Southern California from the rest of the United States and the rest of the world.
