Abstract

This article explores the role of the chief technical officer (CTO) in orchestrating the large manufacturing corporation's product, process, and information technologies. It reports the results of a survey of a survey of 25 CTOs from Fortune 100 industrial companies as well as telephone interviews with 22 of these 25 executives. The article discusses the tasks and backgrounds of CTOs and examines the motivations for the creation of the CTO position.
